ANNOUNCMENT: Blood Transfusion Program Started: Monday February 23, 2026
Today, Baldwin EMS began its Emergency Blood Transfusion Program. We will now be able to administer blood to our patients in an emergency setting when needed. Today not only marks the start up day, but it also identifies two years of hard work by a team of people and groups to bring this to reality for the highest level of patient care possible!!
A team of paramedics and EMT’s, Administrators, EMS West Regional EMS Council, UPMC-Mercy Blood Bank, UPMC Pre-Hospital Services, our Medical Director Dr. Michael Turturro, Vitalant Blood Donation, and our Regional EMS West Blood Task Force-Dr. Vince Mosesso all played key roles in making this care a reality. Our Paramedics and EMT’s have received additional training and education related to Blood Administration as well as being part of setting up the program. The guidance, protocols and oversight for a blood transfusion program are stringent and very clear. We have spent countless hours ensuring we meet all the benchmarks and accountability required in the local, state and federal protocols.
Now when there is a 911 call for major bleeding related injuries or sickness, blood will be available in a unit responding to our emergencies as well as to our mutual aid partners as needed.
Thank You to Everyone that helped with this program!!!!
